Description:

“Persons who violate the law of our nation are subject to prosecution… I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13 to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes,” Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III (named for not one, but TWO Confederate traitors) said recently. “Orderly and lawful processes are good in themselves… and protect the weak and it protects the lawful.”

These were Sessions’ words in response to criticism of the Trump Administration’s policy of separating children from their parents at the nation’s Southern border.

In 2004, our nation was facing similar blurring of the lines between church and state. Barry F. Seidman and Neil J. Murphy published “Towards a New Political Humanism”, a book with a vision of a political platform based on humanist ideals. With the contributors such as Paul Kurtz, Massimo Pigliucci, and our very own Brent Bowen, topics range from gay rights, to patriotism, to ethics. They cover humanism in America and around the globe.

The CFI NE Ohio board felt a connection with this idea and formed a theme for this year’s conference from the threads of these topics. On Saturday, September 22, we invite you to join us for our conference with the theme of “Exploring the Boundaries of Secular Humanism”!

We will bring together engaging speakers on the topic of humanism in politics. Joining us will be Center for Inquiry’s Director of Outreach and Director of African Americans for Humanism, Debbie Goddard. MIchael De Dora, formerly CFI’s Director of the Office of Public Policy and now Washington Advocacy Manager for the Committee to Protect Journalists, will also address us that day.

This year, we are trying out a new venue! You can find us at the Educational Resources Center in Independence. New venue, new menu, riveting speakers, salient topics.

We will announce more details, like price, as they are confirmed. Watch this page, or “cfineohio.org” for updates!

We hope to see you there!
